A proud member of the sugar police

A proud member of the sugar police

Hello fellow mummies,

Today I want to talk about something that’s been weighing on my mind lately – my role as a proud member of the sugar police. It’s a term that’s often used in a negative way, but I believe it’s important to be vigilant about our children’s sugar intake, especially in today’s society where sugary treats are often marketed to them.

As a mother of two young children, I’m constantly trying to balance their love of sweet treats with their overall health and wellbeing. I want them to enjoy childhood pleasures, but I also want them to develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. That’s why I’ve become a bit of a sugar detective, always reading labels and checking ingredients to ensure that I’m making the best choices for my kids.

I understand that some people might see this as overbearing or controlling, but I believe it’s my responsibility as a parent to look out for my children’s health. The dangers of excess sugar consumption are well documented, from tooth decay to obesity and even diabetes. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, children should consume no more than 6 teaspoons (or 25 grams) of added sugars per day. And yet, many children consume far more than that on a daily basis.

It’s not just the obvious culprits like candy and soda that are to blame, either. Sugary treats can be hidden in everything from breakfast cereals to yogurt, so it’s important to read labels carefully. I’ve found that making my own snacks and meals from scratch is often the best way to ensure that my kids are getting the nutrients they need without the added sugars they don’t.

Of course, I’m not perfect. There are times when my kids have had more sugar than I would like, either at a birthday party or as a special treat. But I try to balance those occasions with healthy, sugar-free options at home. And I always explain to my kids why it’s important to make healthy choices, so that they can understand the reasons behind my vigilance.

Being a proud member of the sugar police doesn’t mean that I’m trying to deprive my kids of the joys of childhood. On the contrary, I want them to experience all the fun and excitement that comes with growing up. But I also want to ensure that they’re equipped with the knowledge and habits they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

So if you see me checking labels or saying no to sugary treats, please don’t judge me. Instead, recognize that I’m doing what I believe is best for my children, and maybe even consider joining me in the fight against excess sugar consumption. Together, we can help our kids develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
